Deselection from 640-649 Each subject area has different characteristics and therefore may have different qualities to consider when deselecting. 640-645 (cookbooks/nutrition): • Old cookbooks can be used and dirty • Should be aware of current trends – celebrity and fad diets go out of style • Cookbooks for special diets should reflect current medical information • Nutrition and food prep should reflect the current science/government guidelines 646-648 (sewing/fashion; home repair/fashion): • Sewing, fashion, home fashion should reflect current styles • Home repair should reflect current technology and standards 649 (child rearing): • Weed outdated theories, theories do change over time eg. Gender roles in parenting Other criteria used for deselection: • Circulation statistics – unused books • Quality of content; better books on the topic available • Community needs – books no longer serve informaiton needs of the community
Deselection: Example 1 Country style sewing for the home, 1992 • This book is about interior decoration Chosen for deselection: • It is almost 20 years old, and home fashion trends have changed since then; Country style is not current • There are other, more current books on interior design in the collection • This item had low circulation numbers as well.
Deselection: Example 2 • Help from Heloise, 1981 • Contains hints/remedies for common household problems, including tips for household finances Chosen for deselection: • Date: 1981. Products/technology/costs have changed since then • More up-to-date books on this topic are available, from Heloise, and other authors • Low circulation numbers
Saved item • There may be reasons to keep an item that would otherwise meet the deselection criteria: • Those considered classics in the field of study, or popular titles that are still in demand. • Consider reclassifying the book to move it to another area in the collection where it would get more use – it may have been “lost” in a less suitable area and was not being found by the users. • Procedures that would “save” a deselected item: • Having the library staff review the list of weeded titles; knowledge and experience with the title that may indicate the item is actually useful to the community. • Keeping aware of the community and trends; something that may have not been used much recently may come back into popularity e.g. books on ethnic cooking may not have had an audience, but if immigration trends change there may be more of a demand for it. • An example of a title saved: “Five Roses Cook Book”, 1999 • This item had low circulation statistics, and appears outdated. • Reprint of the classic 1915 edition that was very popular in Canada throughout the years. This book can give someone an idea of what cooking in Canada was like in the early 20th Century. Someone looking for a classic recipe book may also refer it to.
Concluding Remarks • Chatham is a community that is on the grow. It has had some economic hardships as of late, however the Chatham council is committed to making the community viable, and attractive new immigrants and young workers. • The public library needs to ensure its collection meets the needs of the community. The area of home economics and family living is one that is always going to be important to people living and raising families in the community. • It is vital that the library ensures its collection is accessible, current and useful to its users, and anticipates the information needs of the community in the future.

Library Master Plan and Needs Assessment In 2008, the Chatham-Kent Public Library hired consultants to conduct a review of their Public Library system. From this review a Library Master Plan and Community Needs Assessment was developed. • Research shows “a very low level of awareness among Chatham-Kent residents of the range of services the library provides today, and not a good understanding of how the library can help shape Chatham-Kent’s future” • Recommendations in this plan are aimed at repositioning the library as a vital service hub in the community, through improved collections, up-to-date services and technologies, stronger communication and marketing, and a more proactive approach to partnerships and community engagement. • Recommends improving and expanding the collections in general, and to better serve priority audiences. Suggest the inclusion of more adult non-fiction items to meet emerging areas of interest such as healthy cooking, green living, home improvement, etc. • Provide additional library clerks and technicians to address the major functions that are currently not receiving sufficient attention and are high priority service enhancements, particularly marketing and outreach, collection development and technical services and program development. • A substantial increase in the budgets available for collections is recommended. Annual increases in the order of $75,000 for each of the next five years would allow the CKPL to approach funding common in other library systems.
