The Circulatory System Miss Johnston
What is the Circulatory System? • The circulatory system pumps blood around the body. • The blood contains oxygen WRITE THIS DOWN
What is the role of the circulatory system • The role of the circulatory system is to carry materials to and from cells. • The many cells of our body need to be nourished with food and oxygen and have their waste products removed. • Heat is generated from our muscles and other organs and is transferred by the blood to keep us warm.
Heart Beat • Your Heart beats.. Every moment Of every day Of your life • What does a doctor use to listen to your heart? • A stethoscope
What is a pulse? • When the heart beats, it forces blood along tubes called arteries. • In some places we can feel the blood being forced along, this is called a PULSE.
Can you feel your pulse? • YOUR TURN • Where can we feel our pulse?
EXPERIMENT • Aim: To determine your resting heartbeat Work in pairs- one person counts for 30 secs using stopwatch, other person counts pulse • Try to feel the pulse in your wrist use your index and middle finger. (WHY?) • Count how many beats in a 30 seconds • How many beats in 60 seconds?
Whats your heart rate? • What is your heart rate? • Normal rates are about 60-100 beats per minute
How can we change our heart rate? • Exercise? • Run on the spot for 30 seconds • And then measure your pulse for 30 seconds • Work out your heart rate/ minute • Compare your resting heart rate with your running heart rate.
What components make up the circulatory system?? • Heart • Vein • Arteries • Capillaries
Blood Vessels Compare the three types of blood vessels
Arteries have the largest muscle layer • Veins have valves whereas arteries and capillaries don’t. • Capillaries are the thinnest and smallest and only have two layers of tissue. • How does this relates to their function?
Arteries pump blood away from the heart to the rest of the body, this is why they have the most muscle. • Capillaries are delicate networks where cells exchange materials. • Veins carry blood moving back to the heart.
The heart • Is a Muscle and Pump • It pumps blood around the body • The average adult has 5 litres of blood
The Circulation system The Lungs Blood takes up oxygen Goes to other parts of the body
Head and Arms Liver and Digestive Tract Kidneys Legs
Homework • Finish off heart model and stick in book • Label using arrows showing blood flow in the heart.
