  1. Welcome families to back-to-school night! Mrs. Danielle Calero Social Studies

  2. Social Studies • Ancient Civilizations: Early Humankind, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Kush, ancient Hebrews, India, China, ancient Greeks • Class work: 15% Hmwk: 10% Projects & Short response: 25% Quizzes & Tests: 50% • Cornell Notes – Note taking skills • GATE Icons of Depth and Complexity • Cooperative Learning • Projects – at home and in class • Writing (Common Core) - support Language Arts • Use of Technology • Hands-On Learning • 6th grade standards • AR – time will be given in my class to support AR

  3. Tests & Homework • Several days in advance, students are told when they will be having a test or quiz. • Some re-takes may be offered, but it just depends on the needs of the kids. • Homework will be given as needed. All students were given a planner, and every day they are to write down the homework in their planner. You should know what they have for homework every night by reading and checking the planner. • Mr. Michel, Mrs. Buchheim, Mrs. Hamilton, and I accept late work up until a few days before the end of each trimester when report card grades are due. Depending on the assignment, students may lose points because of work turned in late. I have a ‘Late Work’ tray, one for each class, that students will use to turn in any late/make-up/missing work. That is the only place I will look for it. • No extra credit is offered. • When absent, it is the responsibility of the student to get all work that is missed. With 136 students, it makes it difficult to keep up! • If you know ahead of time of an absence, please let us know so we can get the work to your child before they are gone.

  4. Progress reports • Every 3 weeks • At 3 weeks, a progress report will be sent home with your child. We ask that it is signed and returned for us to keep on file. • At 6 weeks, official progress reports will be sent out through the mail to all students who are in danger of failing a class(s). We will also send home with every child a progress report to be signed and returned. • At 9 weeks, a progress report will be sent home with your child to be signed and returned. • Q Online - Parents

  5. Tutorials & Lunch-n-learn • Tutorials will be offered two days a week after school (Mondays & Thursdays). • No late busses will be provided. • 2:10-3:15 • Lunch-n-Learn is offered almost every day of the week in any or all of the 4 classrooms. Students can eat their lunch in the classroom, but they have to be working as well. • Lunch n Learn, however, is not a time to get a head start on homework or a time to complete homework that is due that day. Normally, students work to catch up, or get ahead, in either AR or Accelerated Math. • If any student(s) needs help in any of their classes, they can use Lunch-n-Learn for that as well.

  6. Contact info. • Email: dcalero@cnusd.k12.ca.us • Call the school: 736-3216 • If you would like to set up a meeting/conference, please feel free to email or call myself, Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs. Buchheim, or Mr. Michel, and we would be happy to set up a date and time with you.

  7. Questions? • Thank you for coming tonight! It is going to be a fantastic year together! • We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit. Aristotle
