  1. Framing The Joker By the end of the lesson you will have an understanding of how the framing in the opening sequence place the Joker as the villain.

  2. What is framing? • It is the border of the image on screen. • It produces a vantage point onto the material within the image • It actively defines the image for us

  3. Why is it so important? • Choosing a camera position makes a difference in framing a picture. This in turn affects audience perception of the filmed event

  4. How framing affects the image and our understanding of the image • The size and shape of the frame • The way the frame defines onscreen and off screen space • The way framing controls the distance, angle, and height of a vantage point onto the image • The way framing can move in relation to the mise en scene

  5. Angle in framingWhat effect can this have? High Angle Straight Angle Low Angle

  6. Height and Distance of frame • Height is where the camera has been positioned. • Is it ground level, eye level, shoulder? • This is important to audience perception as well

  7. Distance/type of shot • This supplies a sense of being far away from or close to the subject of the frame. • The distance refers to the type of shot: 1. Extreme long shot /establishing shot the human is barley visible. It sometimes used to establish and re establish setting.

  8. Distance/ type of shot 2. Long shot: figures can be seen more clearly but the background still dominates

  9. Distance/ type of shot 3. Medium Shot: will frame the human body from the waste up 4. Medium close up will frame the body from the waste up.

  10. Distance/ Type of Shot 5.Close up will frame just the head, feet, hands or a small object 6. Extreme close up will single out a portion of the face. The eyes or eyes. This emphasises the detail

  11. Distance/ Type of Shot 7.It can also be used to place us as a character with a point of view shot (POV).

  12. What is the function of framing? • It can help audience understand the film but the meaning can depend on the context of the film • It can isolate important narrative details • It guides audience perception

  13. Mobile framing This is unique to cinema and refers to the way in which a frame moves in respect top the material it frames. These are the types of mobile framing. • Pan • Tilt • Tracking • Crane • Hand held

  14. What is important about mobile framing? • It increases the information we have about what is going on in the image • It can act as a substitute for our movement • Remember to think about how a film maker uses a zoom in or out to create meaning in the film

Conclusion • How does the framing help create the Joker in The Dark Knight? • Watch the clip and pick out least three shots that do this. • Name them and write about the effect they have on you as an audience member. • For example this explains what the est. shot does ta the start of the film. • The opening establishing shot show the audience that the film will be set in a modern urban area.
