The Alliance of NGOs and Local authoritiesagainst racial discrimination • Context : • Rise in racial discrimination and racist violence • Local authoritiescanact • Objectives : • Share best local policies practices against racism and racial discrimination. • Create long term partnerships between European civil society and local authorities. • Make local policies design and implementation easier and more efficient. • 40 local authorities and 35 NGOs involved • Outcomes : • Meetings between stakeholders to exchange best practices – European Guide of Best practices • Conduct project together : training of local civil societies on Testing, Roma Pride • Advice in policy making

Concept Roma Pride : • Mobilizationthattakes place in several countries on the sameday, 1st week end of October • It isboth a cultural and politicalmobilization Objectives : • Promote the diversity of Roma cultures • Denounceracism, discrimination and hardshipsfaced by Roma communities • Call for equality, equalenjoyment of rights and equaldignity for all
Structure of the mobilization Coordinated by EGAM at the Europeanlevel European Roma Pride Manifesto : “For the Dignity of Roma People in Europe : Roma Pride !” published in 15 newspapers in 15 countries. Organizedlocally by a Roma organization and an antiracist NGO, member of EGAM. It allows to launch an alliance between Roma and non-Roma organizations for: • Bettermutualunderstanding • Exchange of expertise • Enhancement of institutional and political protection and power. National coalitions canthenbebroadenedwithother HR NGOs, influentialartists and intellectuals.
Roma issues training and planing Meeting • June each year • Sofia 2012, Bucharest 2011 and 2013, Prague 2014 • Representatives of 30 Roma and antiracist organizations from 16 countries • Receive Training on Roma histories, and contemporary challenges • Worked on the shape mobilization and exchanged on best activities to be implemented

Impacts • Structured mobilization of European and national civil societies in the defense of Roma Rights • End of Ataka’s demonstrations in Bulgaria • Large demonstrations in Romania, Czech Republic and Hungary • Several public events in many countries in Europe in order to raise awareness among the general population and decision makers on situations faced by Roma communities • Mobilization in Sweden against Police profiling • Direct media attention and advocacy activities in order to obtain legal improvements and changes in policy making • Ex : loi 1969 in France • More empowered and protected national Roma and non-Roma NGOs (training, European dimension, exchange of expertise)
Nextsteps for 2014 • Preparatory Meeting : Prague, Startingtoday for 4 days – 16 countries – 24 NGOs – 40 participants.
