Japanese Internment Notes. Objective: Discuss the war’s effect on Japanese Americans. Internment. Attack on Pearl Harbor caused fear of the Japanese and anti- Japanese feelings to grow. People’s fear of Japanese invasion coupled with these feelings brought suspicion of Japanese Americans.

Internment • Attack on Pearl Harbor caused fear of theJapanese and anti- Japanese feelings to grow. • People’s fear of Japanese invasion coupled with these feelings brought suspicion of Japanese Americans. • In an effort to contain Japanese, many are interned- forced to relocate and are imprisoned. • February 1942 FDR signs Executive Order 9066 which authorized the establishment of internment camps for Japanese Americans

Two Types: • Issey- ( E- say) • Born in Japan regarded by government as aliens and ineligible for citizenship. • Nisei ( knee- say) • Born in U.S. are considered citizens. • Both were interned • No disloyalty was ever proven. • Removed from west coast and moved inland away from areas they thought susceptible to sabotage.

  4. Arizona Internment Camps • Poston • Gila River Indian Reservation

Service • Some joined the service and fought in Europe. • Wanted to prove their loyalty. • 442nd Infantry “Go For Broke” one of the most decorated units of WW II was made up of Nisei. • Many became translators and interpreters. • Supreme Court upheld the governments right to intern Japanese in Korematsu v. United States • Congress in the 1990’s apologized.
