1. Identificació de l’organisme The special libraries of the Government of the Generalitat de Catalunya • Ministry of Culture and the Media • General Sub-Directorate for Libraries biblioteques@gencat.cat

2. Definition The special libraries of the Government of the Generalitat de Catalunya are all libraries belonging to the Administration of the Generalitat de Catalunya and public entities, related or dependent on it. They are 114 libraries.

3. Legal frame Law 4/1993, 18th March, Library System of Catalonia (DOGC núm. 1727, de 29.3.1993) Article 5 The Library System of Catalonia is the organized set of librarian services existing in Catalonia. The Library System of Catalonia consists of: a) Catalonia's National Library. b) Catalonia's Public Reading System. c) The university libraries, school libraries and the special libraries.

Legal frame • Law 4/1993, 18th March, Library System of Catalonia • (DOGC núm. 1727, de 29.3.1993) • Article 45 • Specialized libraries • -1 We consider special libraries the ones keeping, mainly, items referred to a specific field of knowledge. • 2 The special libraries, which can be of public or privateownership, give a public service with some restrictions according to their nature and they are coordinated to the rest of the Library System according to the article 43.2 for the university libraries.

Legal frame Law 4/1993, 18th March, Library System of Catalonia (DOGC núm. 1727, de 29.3.1993) Article 43 University libraries (...) - 2 The university libraries are coordinated with the rest of the Library System through the Biblioteca de Catalunya in matters regarding to cataloguing, interlibrary loan and the protection of historical or cultural valuable items. Other kinds of coordination can be established with other libraries for shared services.

Proceedings 2009 • The Subdirecció General de Biblioteques, from a new context, takes to support and encourage BEG. • Creating an application for the publication of the directory in electronic format BEG. • Several meetings with the BEG to inform them about the proposal of future guidelines regarding the BEG’s. • Proposal of migration and extension of the BEG’s catalogue. • Proposal of some new working groups promoted by the Subdirecció General de Biblioteques. • Programming conferences about “The legal framewok of Catalan libraries”

Future prospects • Institutional support and developing a legalframe. • Empowerment of resources: • Change catalogue management program and improvements in the consultation. • Participation in the future Catalan union catalogue • Access to the digital collections via the metasearch engine “Eureca” • Improving and implementing new services: • ILL between BEG and Public Libraries in the country. • Introduction of bag for interconnection BEG with other types of libraries in the country. • More visibility of BEG through the portal and directory of libraries as well as at the time of the catalogue of Catalunya.
