  1. What’s My Mindset?

  2. How do you think about learning?A. B. • I feel smart when I don’t make any mistakes. • I feel smart when I finish something fast and it’s perfect. • I feel smart when something is easy for me, but other people can’t do it. • I’m not smart if I fail at something. • I like to hear people say, “You must be really smart! You figured that out quickly.” • I feel smart when I try really hard. • I feel smart when I can do something I couldn’t do before. • I feel smart when I work on something for a long time and figure it out. • I enjoy hard challenges in the classroom. • I don’t want easy work at school. • I failed doesn’t mean I am not successful.

  3. Which one did you choose? A or B? • You have a fixed mindset if you picked A. • You have a growth mindset if you • picked B.

  4. What does that mean? FIXEDMINDSET GROWTH MINDSET I might say: “I feel like a failure”, “Everyone’s better than me”, or “That’s not fair.” How do people with a fixed mindset act? • They don’t want to give time to learn. • They don’t want to give any effort. • Do nothing • Pout • Cry “What is there to do? I can’t do anything about it.” I might say: “I need to try harder in class”, “I need to be more careful when …”,or “I wonder if my friend had a bad day, and how can I help?” How might people with a growth mindset act? • They study harder. • They give their best effort. • When something doesn’t work, they use a different strategy. • Direct action – don’t give up. • Fnd a solution: “I work out how to solve the problems in school and with friends.”

  6. How can I get a growth mindset? • I accept positive and constructive feedback. • I revise my work to make it better. I can always find a way to make it better. • I motivate myself to learn. • I take charge of my learning process. • I embrace my own goals. • I look for different ways to create my learning using tools and strategies. • I never say, “I can’t”, I always say “I can’t yet, but I am working towards it. I will.” • I enjoy hard work and challenges all day. • I look for ways to learn, think, and investigate the world around me. • I “stretch” beyond my ordinary abilities which means I can achieve more than I have before. • I am focused under pressure. • I give all-out effort 100% of the time! Growth Mindset unleashes your effort!

  7. Questions to Ask Myself when learning is hard: • What can I learn from this? • How can I improve? • What is a different way I can go about this problem? • Am I giving 100% of my effort? • Did I dig through my backpack of tools and strategies to find one that works? • Am I focused on the task at hand? • Am I taking charge of my learning? • Am I pushing myself to keep going when tasks are hard? • Am I saying “yet”? (Never say “I can’t”, but say “I can’t yet, but I will.” • Am I working hard all the time?

  8. See mindset in action • Hard work, focus, and effort
