Lesson 2-Getting Started: Installing Windows Server 2003 by Rashid Khan
Overview • Check hardware compatibility. • Choose an installation method. • Make pre-installation decisions. • Install and activate Windows Server 2003. • Update Windows Server 2003. • Troubleshoot common installation problems. by Rashid Khan
Check Hardware Compatibility • Microsoft Windows Upgrade Advisor utility. (From Installation CD) -LAB • Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) and Windows Server Catalogue. ->The OS that does not support up gradation? ->On line by Rashid Khan
Microsoft Windows Upgrade Advisor Utility Microsoft Windows Upgrade Advisor utility: • Is used to detect and fix hardware problems before the operating system is installed. • Can be run from the installation CD. by Rashid Khan
Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) and Windows Server Catalog • The HCL provides a comprehensive list of hardware products by category and keyword. • The Windows Server Catalog tool is used to check hardware compatibility for Windows Server 2003. by Rashid Khan
Choose an Installation Method • Attended installation • Unattended installation • Other installation options by Rashid Khan
Attended Installation • An attended installation requires a user’s continuous involvement during the installation process. • This installation method requires the least amount of preparation. by Rashid Khan
Unattended Installation • An unattended installation does not require constant user involvement during the installation process. • The installation can be initiated by pre-configuring an answer file called unattend.txt. by Rashid Khan
Unattended Installation Unattended installations are beneficial: • When the operating system is to be installed on several similar servers. • For deploying a large number of client operating systems such as Windows XP or Windows 2000 Professional. • This method WILL NOT BE DISCUSSED HERE. There is No NEED to install many copies of Server by Rashid Khan
Other Installation Options • Network installation • Imaged installation by Rashid Khan
Network Installation For installing Windows Server 2003 on computers connected to an existing network: • Copy the \I386 directory from the installation CD to a shared folder on the network. • Copy files, such as answer files and device drivers, to the same folder. • Map the folder to a drive letter on the machine where the operating system is to be installed. by Rashid Khan
Imaged Installation • Imaged installation is useful when Windows Server 2003 needs to be set up on several identical computers. • Disk image is used to perform imaged installations. by Rashid Khan
Make Pre-Installation Decisions • Question? • Upgrade or clean installation • Partitioning • File system • Licensing • Server name • Initial password • Network settings by Rashid Khan
Upgrade or Clean Installation Clean installation: • Refers to installing the operating system on a computer hard drive that does not contain any prior operating system or data. • Eliminates any chance of incompatibilities with older software. • Provides the new operating system maximum control over certain aspects of hardware configuration. by Rashid Khan
Upgrade or Clean Installation Upgrade installation: • New operating system replaces the existing operating system. • Existing configuration settings and installed applications, and data are preserved. • It does not support downgrades. by Rashid Khan
Partitioning • A hard drive partition is a discrete portion of the hard drive. • The partition is used as a structure for organizing data on the drive. by Rashid Khan
File System • File system organizes the partition and tracks the location of files on the drive. • The basic file systems are FAT and NTFS. by Rashid Khan
Licensing The two licensing modes for Windows Server 2003 are: • Per-Server licensing. • Per-Device or Per User licensing. by Rashid Khan
Per-Server Licensing • Per-Server licensing is based on the total number of concurrent connections to a particular server. • It is ideal for small networks. by Rashid Khan
Per-Device or Per-User Licensing • Per Device licensing requires a license for every connection to the server. • There is no limit on simultaneous connections. • It is ideal for large networks where client devices connect to more than one server. by Rashid Khan
Server Name • The server name must be unique. • It can contain a maximum of 63 characters. • It can have upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens. by Rashid Khan
Initial Password • Passwords are required to keep the system secure. • They must be changed frequently. • Passwords must not be reused. by Rashid Khan
Network Settings The Windows Server 2003 installation program offers two types of network settings: • Typical settings – Configure the server to use the TCP/IP protocol suite and obtain the correct IP address automatically. • Custom settings – Allow users to select and configure the required networking protocols and services. by Rashid Khan
Install and Activate Windows Server 2003 • Perform an attended installation. • Test the installation. by Rashid Khan

Test the Installation • Log on to Windows Server 2003. • Microsoft Product Activation (MPA) and Windows Server 2003. by Rashid Khan
Log on to Windows Server 2003 The Welcome to Windows logon prompt by Rashid Khan
Microsoft Product Activation (MPA) and Windows Server 2003 • Microsoft Product Activation (MPA) is a new approach to reduce piracy of operating systems, office suites, and other Microsoft products. • Through MPA, products must be activated within a limited number of days or they will not work. • Products can be activated only on one computer system, thus eliminating the value of illicit copies of the software. by Rashid Khan

Update Windows Server 2003 • Windows Update • Configure Windows Update by Rashid Khan
Windows Update • Windows Update is a Web-based service built into Windows Server 2003. • It provides a quick and easy way to check and install updates. by Rashid Khan
Windows Update The four categories of updates are: • 1 Critical updates – Address security flaws or problems that could result in data loss or system failure. • 2 Service packs – Collection of updates, improvements, and additions to the operating system released after intensive testing. • 3 Windows Server 2003 family – Includes minor refinements and additions to the operating system. • 4 Driver updates – Improvements to software programs that allow hardware components to communicate with the operating system. by Rashid Khan
Configure Windows Update The Settings section on the Automatic Updates tab provides the following options for installing updates: • Notify Before Downloading. • Download Updates and Notify Before Installing. • Automatically Download and Install. by Rashid Khan
Troubleshoot Common Installation Problems • Installation failures • Installation aborts • Post-installation problems by Rashid Khan
Installation Failures Windows Server 2003 installation may fail if: • The operating system upgrade path does not support its installation. • The computer does not support bootable CDs. • The user fails to press the required key at the stipulated time to boot the system from the CD drive. by Rashid Khan
Installation Aborts Resuming a failed installation: • If the installation program reboots into the graphical interface, it will start the process from where it left off. • If the installation fails during text mode portion, it would be necessary to repartition and reformat the drive. by Rashid Khan
Post-Installation Problems Addressing unexpected performance problems: • Check for device driver compatibility. • Check for application updates. • Check Windows Update for recent upgrades. by Rashid Khan
Summary • Microsoft Windows Upgrade Advisor, HCL, and Windows Server Catalog can be used to check hardware compatibility. • Windows Server 2003 can be installed using the attended or unattended installation method. • Aspects such as the type of installation, the file system, partitioning, licensing mode, password, and network settings must be considered before installing Windows Server 2003. • Windows Update is used to check and install new updates. by Rashid Khan
