Ebog.dk - The Danish Initiative for Digital Books

  2. What is Ebog.dk? • A book store • Not a publisher. • Not a graphic production company. • A commercial venture • An A/S (inc., ltd., GmbH.). • We make our living from selling books.

  3. Who is behind Ebog.dk? • Initiative from Forlæggerforeningens Sektion for Undervisningsforlag/SFU (Section of Educational Publisher in the Danish Publishers Association). • Founded by Dansk BiblioteksCenter A/S (Danish Library Centre/DBC) and Infomedia Huset A/S (Berlingske Officin og JP/Politikens Fond (daily newspapers)). • Present shareholders: DBC, Aschehoug Dansk Forlag (Egmont), Bonnier Forlagene (Egmont), Gyldendal Nordisk Boghandel, DJØF Jurist og Økonomforbundets Forlag and Erhvervsskolernes Forlag.

Our brief history I • 2005 • SFU invites selected suppliers to tender for a sales portal for ebooks. • The tender is won by DBC and Infomedia. • 2006 • Project phase clarifying legal and technical aspects. • Contract with ValueChain for the development of the portal in xml format. • January – March 2007 • The organisation is established. • A beta-version is operative. • Technical development to adjust the system to Adobe pdf format. • Agreements with 30 publishers, 67 works/books.

Our brief history II • April –June 2007. • Systems update • Chapter separated materiale in Adobe pdf • Changes of layout og functionalities • 45 publishers, app. 350 works, plus 800 chapters. • July –august 2007 • Systems update • Rent of works in Adobe pdf • Introduction of iSilo format for mobile units • Update of payment routines • 52 publishers, app. 500 works, plus 1000 chapters.

Our brief history III • October 2007 • Systems update • Adjustment of help texts and download wizzard. • Development of library system completed. • Introduction of new front page and Ebog Forum. • 53 publishers, 607 works, plus 1300 chapters. • November 2007 • Multi-user licenses for corporate customers. • E-invoicing to government customers. • Pending development projects • Other types of material – audio, maps. • Hosting for publishers.

Works/content – reader formats • Adobe Reader • Pdf format, sale and rent, chapter separation is available, for pc and Mac, print permitted. • MS Reader • Microsoft, sale, for pc, Mac and some mobile units, no print. • iSilo Reader • Format adjusted to many mobile units (pda and Mobil telephone), sale and rent, chapter separation is awailable, print permitted. • DX Reader • Online xml format, rent, print and copy/paste can be bought.

Payment possibilities • Individual purchase • Charge card or credit card. • Wallet for micro payment. • Company purchase • Delivery of multiple copies of the same title. • Sales to private companies through account. • Sales to public companies through e-invoicing (EAN-IOS). • Library licenses • Pay per view.

Ebog.dk – more access points • Customers • Ebog Boghandel: The book store. • Ebog Forum: Debate, news and web 2.0. • Publishers • Ebog Posthus: Mailbox for delivery of meta data, commercial text, prices, ebooks and covers. • Ebog Forlagsrapporter: Portal for sales statistics. • Libraries • Ebib: Loaner web interface. Integrated with the libraries’ own web portal. • Ebib Library reports: Portal for user statistics.

  11. Ebib license model • Functionality • Loan period is one week. Re-loan after one month. • Access on-site or remote. • No print or copy/paste. • The Libraries can select the titles they want (no packages). • The libraries have options to limit access and loaning. • Interconnected with the local library catalogues and DanBib (danMARC2). • Access to loaning statistics (Counter compliancy is under way). • Link from Bibliotek.dk with the ”To-buy” facility. • Price structure • A one time access fee based on number of potential users. • Advance payment on pay-per-view charge. • Pay-per-view is based on the individual ebook price of the works.
