Lois Garrett’s Journey To America By: Morgan
Ellis Island. I couldn’t believe it. The boat ride had finally ended. I was SO happy. The whole ride was a smelly nightmare.
Inside the immigration station was a lot cleaner. And it smelled a little nicer too. Now we had to try not to lose each other.
Although some people didn’t know it, these stairs were actually a test. All the doctors were waiting at the top to see if anyone needed help getting up the stairs. If you did, you would get marked with chalk.
Ouch, this was the dreaded eye exam. I’m so disgusted, and scared. What I hear from the Polish, is the doctors use a tool to flip up your eyelid to see if you have trachoma. The part I’m really scared about is that they don’t wash the tool.
This part of the journey was boring. We waited nearly four hours cramped, in this smelly room. It wasn’t fun.
The questions the inspectors asked here were extremely hard for me. Since I’m deaf, I could barely understand the English words they were mouthing to me. But eventually, we got through.
When we came here we didn’t think we would have enough money to go through. “This is the end of our journey,” Mama said. But to our surprise, we did have enough! We were the lucky ones.
This was the end of our smelly, sweaty, dirty journey. We were finally here, FREE! We were now American citizens.
