There are five truths that we need to understand: 1. Self examination is a priority in God’s Eyes.
Psalm 26:2 Test me, O Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind… Proverbs 5:21 For a man’s ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all his paths.
Psalm 139:1-4 O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord
2. There are cultural challenges that hinder self examination.
Hebrews 2:1 We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?
James 1:22-25 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it – he will be blessed in what he does.
