How Sedimentary Rocks Are Formed? • In the beginning rocks were broken down to small pieces because of erosion and weathering which, were then piled on each other and after a long time they formed in to a sedimentary rock. • Created when sediment composes
Types of Sedimentary Rocks. • Flint • A sedimentary rocks • Used for weapons • Frequently contains fossils • Sandstone-sometimes known as Arenite • A sedimentary rock composed of sand sized minerals or rock grains- has many layers-some resistant from weathering. • Limestone-many layers –covers 10% of all sedimentary rocks • Composed by the mineral calcite and aragonite • Often has many fossils
Properties of Sedimentary Rocks • Hard and rough • Has many layers • Made from sediments • May contain fossils • May be found in oceans, floodplains, rivers, lakes, swamps and lagoons • Theses rocks are laid down in layers called beds of strata
