Rates • A rate is a ratio between two measurements with different units, usually per time. There are two ways it is used. • An average rate can be calculated using the total distance travelled between a and b, divided by the travel time • An instantaneous rate can be determined by viewing a speedometer.
Rate Problem • A car is traveling 50 miles per hour. At this rate, how many hours have gone by when the car has traveled 120 miles with a 30 minute break? • A: 3 hours • B: 4 hours 50 minutes • C: 5 hours 36 minutes • D: 8 hours
The correct answer is • B: 4 hours 50 minutes • This is because you find out how much time has past in 20 miles, so you divide 50 miles by 5, and an hour by 5 to get 120 minutes in one hour
