    3. Drug Treatment – The NW Picture Poly Drug Use is norm (Heroin, Crack, Benzos, Alcohol) Approximately 80,000 PDUs (Heroin and Crack Cocaine) 50% in treatment Treatment for most has been methadone maintenance in community North West Recovery Pilot 2005-2008

Pathways to treatment from CJS The Police Station Experience – DIPped and sent for standard treatment response The Court and Probation Experience – DRR’d standard treatment response with conditions The Prison Experience – IDTS’d - offered standard treatment response available in community (methadone) in prison The Prison Experience – CARATed offered more than standard treatment response (e.g. Community Res Rehab)

    6. Population segmentation and targeting – The Re-Cyclers: Opiate dependent, poly drug using, socially excluded addicts, in and out of treatment, arrested for theft. The Treatment Naive addict: as above but not as damaged The ‘binge drinking, recreational’ cocaine powder user who gets caught in the DIP net

End of Careers Study: All is not well in an addiction career just by achieving abstinence Abstinence needs to be maintained 12 step approach had been instrumental in maintaining abstinence in 77% of the population studied (n228) 12 Step treatment and fellowship may be a big part of Integrated Pathways in Practice

    14. Recovery Oriented (Journeys, Care Plans, TOP, Maps & Language) Everyone in treatment is on a journey Everyone in treatment has a care plan that guides the journey. Everyone in treatment will have a TOP form on entry, review and exit. ITEP mapping used to guide the client through the treatment system. In a recovery oriented treatment system, everyone speaks the language of recovery.

    15. Integrated An integrated community of treatment service providers Services work with the client’s care plan, TOP form and ITEP map. Workers in an integrated system are trained together in recovery principles and practice. Services in an integrated system are (contractually?) required to integrate their practice with other services. Recovered and recovering clients assist in training workers. 12 Step Mutual Aid (NA, CA, AA) an integral part of a ROIS.

    16. System A ROIS is a genuine integrated system. A system is commissioned by leaders with a vision of recovery (not left to providers to work out and define their own version of recovery). Market testing is an ideal strategy in the current economic climate as it creates opportunities for efficiencies Resources are invested in services in the system and the system produces the recovery outcomes. Lancashire is largest system in the NW Lancashire’s service modernisation has attracted new provider partnerships that will result in genuine collaborations on the ground and will create viable pathways to recovery.
