Employability for Life Charter LA/ASHE Secondary Headteachers’ Meeting Andy Hodgkinson Wednesday 10th May 2017
Objectives • To explain the background to, and the purpose of, the Employability for Life Charter • To outline the benefits to other schools • To explain how the EFL Charter is being improved to reduce workload
Why an Employability for Life Charter? • A response to concerns from Essex employers about “work readiness” • Addresses soft skills/employability skills and establishes links with employers (networking) • A desire to link these concerns to the wider educational aims of equipping learners for life beyond school/habits of mind etc.
Employability for Life Charter • Portfolio approach (like Records of Achievement) • Charter – (Years 10 & 11) – 5 key employability areas • Charter Plus – (Sixth Form) - 6 key employability areas
Building a Portfolio Evidence should be presented in a loose leaf folder and will include: • A cover page • A table of contents • The moderation grade sheet • The evidence, coded against the different standards • Current CV • Personal Statement within CV, about 150 words • There must be a strong sense of journey explained including reflective statements throughout • Evidence of 2+ interactions with employers
Employability for Life - Awards • Levels required in each of the 5/6 categories: • Levels required for overall award
Benefits • 16 – 19 study programmes • Self-esteem/confidence • Develops a range of WRL skills (Ofsted) • Future employability • Gives pupils confidence in interviews • Rigour with employers • Link to DfE character awards • Improved NEET rates • Improved attendance rates at Key Stage 4
Issues Being Addressed • Amount of moderation – sample size to be reduced • Essex Business & Skills Unit’s lack of capacity would push onus back to schools but… ASHE will drive from now on • Funding now secured to produce the official certificates which students really do value on results day!
