Sumerians 4000 BC • Baru-priests were the first astrologers • Read the sky for warnings • Predicted natural events • Designed a 12 month calendar • Identified cycles of the sun, moon, planets and stars • Old Babylonian Period 2000 BC • Focused on the well-being of the kingdom • Venus was associated with love and war • 1300 BC precursors to individual horoscopes

Assyrian Era 1300-600 BC • State is more important than individual • Refined the calendar • Created star maps, constellations, and astrolabes • Astrologers were well-respected • Named 18 constellations • Most important planets were: • Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn • Emphasis on the Sun and moon as well
