  1. How to Plan Your Festival Set January 28, 2008

  2. Agenda • Basics • Questions about the Content • Comments from Past Experience • What to do Right Now

  3. Basics 25 Minute set includes entrance, applause, spoken words, exit. 15 Minute tech rehearsal includes entrance, set-up, exit. This must be “cue to cue.” (meaning start and stop each piece)

  4. Questions about the Content • What do you want them to take away from your set? • How does your set reflect or further the GALA mission? • Are you providing usable music for others to perform? • What do your singers want to sing? • Have you chosen an interesting variety of music? • Even 25 minutes can be boring. • Do you have TLC – a tear, a laugh and a chill bump?

  5. Comments from Past Experience • You can use Christmas or other thematic music. • Choose your “hits” from the last 4 years. • Make sure that, even though your chorus and audience loved it, it is somewhat original and not already been sung by every GALA chorus – unless you have a particular twist or unique presentation of the song. • Make sure you know the riser layout before tech rehearsal. • Rehearse everything over and over; entrances, riser layout, moves, etc.

  6. Comments from Past Experience • Perform your set for an audience at home before you arrive at GALA. • Don’t use too many instruments – showcase your choir. • Tracks are difficult to manage because of the limited rehearsal time. • It is more of a sharing time than just impressing everyone. • Too much gay music is just preaching to the choir. • It would be great to program a “classic” piece – not classical.

  7. What to Do Now • Make a list of your favorites and the favorites of your singers and audience. • Make sure they are all “legal” compositions or arrangements. • Divide them into groups that are fun, emotional, uplifting, empowering, educating, show-stopping. • Pick one from each group! • Gather all of the information you need regarding publishers, etc.

  8. What to Do Now • Time your music • Time your words • Time your segue’s • Then add a little time for the surprises. • Less is more – you don’t have to use every second of your time.
