Objectives • Upon completion, participant will be able to: • Identify the importance for increased hand hygiene compliance rates within a healthcare setting • Discuss key interventions to increase hand hygiene compliance rates within a healthcare setting • Construct and implement strategies to sustain increased hand hygiene compliance rates within a healthcare setting
What’s the problem? • Hand hygiene compliance rates remain low among healthcare workers • Poor hand hygiene compliance jeopardizes patient safety by potentially increasing healthcare associated infections (HAIs) • Prevent 1/3 of HAIs by practicing good hand hygiene Hand Hygiene Best Practice Team set out to increase compliance rates!!
Interventions • Developed a Secret Shopper Program • Increased the availability of alcohol based hand gel throughout the hospital • Placed red flags on gel dispensers to alert staff members when servicing was needed • Sent letters from the chief medical officer to noncompliant healthcare workers • Awarded trophies to the elite groups of compliant healthcare workers

Conclusion • Multifaceted interventions led to: • Significant and sustained increase in hand hygiene compliance rates • Change in culture that brought hand hygiene awareness to all healthcare workers • Prevention of potential patient harm • Must have Leadership Support
Future Plans • Secret Shopper Training classes held monthly • Hand hygiene compliance rates are still collected and distributed monthly throughout the system • Best Practice Team is developing new initiatives to keep front line staff engaged and involved in spreading the excitement about hand hygiene
