What is the Cycle of Violence in Domestic Relationships? • Often attributed to Lenore Walker • Not a linear process • She found ‘cycle’ to be more apt • Tension building (sources of tension?) • Time periods variable
Even violent relationships aren’t “just” violent… • Outbreak of violence • Followed by what’s often called “the honeymoon period” • Overcompensation/ or compensating • Apologies, promises to do better, candy, flowers, gifts • But also sometimes rationalization, minimizing the harm, denying responsibility, shifting the ‘blame’
The Cycle of Domestic Violence continued • Could be days, weeks, months, years • Without interruption, though, often followed by • Tension building phase again • Outbreak of violence again
The question always asked • By researchers • By police, courts, agencies • “Why does she stay?” • Is this an interesting question…sure? • Should it be our first question…hmmm? • But ok, why?
Possible answers • Financial dependence • Emotional dependence or co dependency • Learned helplessness • Family or cultural teachings • Children’s stability • For the good times • Drug or alcohol issues
Another really good question: • Why does he batter?
