String Lessons • 30 Minute Group Lesson • 5 Week Rotating Schedule • Lesson is on the same Day, but the time changes • Requirements to attend lesson • Practice record completed and signed • Written Homework completed • Forgetting your instrument/music • Students are allowed to go to the office and call home prior to 9:00 a.m.
What to expect for the first lesson • 2nd year students: • Review of note reading and string expectations • Homework – notation packet as well as review exercises in the book. • Beginner Students: • Explanation of Practice Record • Introduction to Note Reading • Musical Alphabet Song • Learning about the staff, line and space notes, mnemonics • Homework – Notation Packet and memorizing Alphabet Song
Practicing • The objective of practicing is to master skills/assignments. • 100 minutes a week • 5 times a week for 20 minutes • 4 times a week for 25 minutes
Practicing and SFPB • Say, Finger, Pluck, Bow • Should be performed fluently before moving to the next step. • Violin only – rest, guitar, shoulder position • Use DVD to listen to song • Play along with DVD to show proficiency
Sample Practice Record • Attend each lesson with a completed practice record. This is your ticket into the class!
Requirements to Attend Lessons • Students must come prepared with their instrument, music folder; written homework and practice complete, signed and completed practice record. • If a student forgets their instrument, they may call home from the Main Office before 9:00 a.m. • If a students does not have their instrument, they will not be able to attend their lessons. • However, they are responsible to check with the teacher to get the new assignment. • After the lesson or the next day they are in school between 8:40-8:55.
Caley Instrumental Policy • Students cannot miss their academic subjects if they have not practiced or are not prepared for class. • If a student is unable to attend a lesson due to absence or being unprepared, it is their responsibility to come to the music room after their lesson or the next morning to get their assignment. • If a student is unprepared or cannot proficiently perform assignments over a three week period, the parent/guardian will be contacted for a conference (phone/in person) • If after that conference, there is still no change/improvement in the pattern, the principal will determine his/her eligibility to continue lessons.
Acquiring a String Instrument • String Sizes • Recommend renting & getting insurance. • Places to purchase instruments • Internet “instruments” “VSO’s” • What to look for in a string instrument
Instrument Accessories • Violin and Cello – Collapsible Music Stand (around $15) • Rosin – (usually provided with a rental) • Rectangular, inside of a wood casing • Do not want to get rosin in a circle package that you have to hold the rosin itself • Sticky and VERY breakable • Violin • Thin shoulder rest/sponge • Order thru www.musicarts.com, www.amazon.com • Recommend shoulder rest for ¾-4/4 • Sponge is provided for a Music and Arts rental • Do NOT buy sponge through Sam Ash • Cello • Rock stop (if practicing on any floor other than carpet) • Recommend the kind that attaches to the bottom of a chair
Ensemble • Students from different lesson groups, grades, and ability levels meet to practice together. • Learn to play in a group, play their part when others are playing a different part, watch a conductor • 40 minutes once a week during the school day. • Requirements to join ensemble.
For Students enrolled in Strings and Band- 4th Grade • Students will have a 30 minute group lesson for their string instrument and a 30 minute lesson for their band instrument during the school day. • Students will need to practice and complete homework for both lessons. • If an academic concern arises due to pullouts, a parent may be contacted by the classroom teacher/principal.
Caley String Performances-All performances in Caley MPR • Winter Concert • Thursday December 15 at 7 p.m. • Second year students • must be able to play at least two songs to participate. • Winter String Assembly • Friday December 16 10-10:45 a.m. • Beginner Students who can perform two of the songs proficiently by memory • Second year students who met Winter String Concert requirements. • Caley String Concert • Thursday May 10 at 7 p.m. • Caley String Assembly • Friday May 11 10-11 a.m.
