What Is Dogmatism? • Dogmatism is the tendency to lay down principles as incontrovertibly true, without consideration of evidence or the opinions of others.
Easy way to remember Dogmatism? • Think of the fans of the University of Kentucky. Some fans clearly believe that the University of Kentucky has the best college sports team in the country, which is wrong. This is dogmatism because the fans believe that UK is the best sports team in the country and refuse to believe that any other team could be better than they are.
This picture is an example of dogmatism because it portrays the fact that most people think that every Pakistani MUST be a terrorist. People may be ignorant and believe this fact just because they have limited knowledge of people from the Middle East.
Example From The Crucible • Elizabeth: “If you think I am one, then I say there are none”- Act 2, page 200 • This is an example of dogmatism because when hale asks Elizabeth about being a witch, she simply replies with the above. This is because she knows she's not a witch and if she is charged as one, then witches do not exist in her mind.
Example #2 • Parris: “This is a clear attack upon the court!” – Act 3, Page 212 • This is an example of dogmatism because Parris is talking about John Proctor, and just a few lines earlier John says “I do not wish to hurt the court…” Thus this displays Parris’ stubbornness to believe that his view of things must be correct.
Example #3 • Proctor: “But if she say she is pregnant, then she must be!”- Act 3, Page 212 • This displays dogmatism because John Proctor believes his wife can’t tell a lie. Even though this is pretty much impossible. When faced with as much stress as Elizabeth would surely lie if she had to. She even deliberately lies during the trial to protect John’s image.
