  6. Controversy *business methods used by tour operators: exclusivity deals, and catering to the needs of the volunteer rather than the volunteer project, exploit the communities the projects are intended to help. *source: wikipedia

  7. Clarification *current volunteer vacation programs not fully realize their purpose of serving, but have resulted in another value for volunteer vacation—cultural exchange

  8. Clarification *both of the two cultures of people can learn and appreciate each other, having new experience and stimulation for their lives *it is also good for both side: the volunteers and local people

  9. Clarification *realize that we are not to “help the poor”, but to have new cultural experience through our serving *will not treat the local people arrogantly, and be too despair of the dissatisfaction of traveling or serving after participating in the program.

Program 3: Volunteer with Street Children in India *There are about 100 million street children in India who do not attend any school and spend most of their time on the streets. *In Delhi, the capital city, it is estimated that there are close to 1, 75,000 street children of which 7-10 % are runaways. *more than 2500 children who live in and around New Delhi Railway Station. *scavenging the rubbish heap for a meal , sleeping between the tracks , often beaten and sexually abused , falling prey to drug peddlers , pimps and child traffickers * Volunteers can bring smile on the faces of these disadvantaged street children

  17. Program 3: Volunteer with Street Children in India • Your Role in the Program: to help educate, feed and take care of children coming to the street shelter homes. The shelter homes are set up by the government or by various NGO's in and around Delhi Bangalore and Kolkata. Volunteers work 4-5 hours, 5 days a week to help children with providing basic education. Volunteers also spend time with children playing games and sports and doing art and craft activities with them. • Skills and Educational Requirements: no educational requirement for this project anyone with a heart to help is welcome on this project! proficiency in English is required • Fee: 1 week: USD450; 2 weeks: USD650 (USD100 for every additional week )

Cultural Differences/Cultural Shock *Greeting -When volunteers want to say hi to the local people, they have to learn the way how local people say hi to their friends. e.g. Volunteers service in Western or Eastern countries. - Volunteers/local people try to use the way as they use in their countries, they may misunderstand each other. e.g. Some volunteers don’t do the greeting ( kiss or hug each other), local people may think they are not friendly.

  27. Cultural differences/Cultural shock *Dining Habit -The ways people eat are very different. e.g. a. In some countries, people may grasp food straightly with their hands. b. people eat foods without cooking. -Different type of foods e.g. In some countries, people may eat snake, vole or rabbit.

Cultural differences/Cultural shock *Standard of living -Volunteers have some expensive equipments. -Local people are relatively poor, and they can’t afford most things that volunteers have. -In this case, people in the host country may think that volunteers are showing off what they have, and they may see themselves as an inferior person.
