AID Selection Authors: Date: 2010-09-13 Youhan Kim, et al.
Background • AID is a value assigned by AP during association that represents the ID of the STA • Possible AID values: 1–2007 • AID of value 0 is reserved for broadcast/multicast packets • VHT-SIG A has a partial AID field for SU packets to enable STA power saving [1] Youhan Kim, et al.
Special AID for AP • No AID defined for APs • AID 0 reserved for broadcast/multicast packets • STA unable to utilize AID based power save mode when detecting STA-to-AP packets if AID 0 is reused for STA-to-AP packets • Suggest to use special (non-zero) AID value(s) for STA-to-AP packets Youhan Kim, et al.
AID Generation (1) • 802.11 spec does not define how AP should generate/assign AIDs • Most existing AP implementations assign AIDs starting from 1 and increasing sequentially • Highly likely two STAs in OBSSs will share the same AID • Unable to utilize AID based power save mode when detecting packets destined to the STA in OBSS • Similar situation when multiple BSSs (BSSIDs) are supported in an AP • AP should generate/assign AID in a random manner • E.g. AP picks a random base for AID assignment upon power up. AP then assign AIDs in sequence starting from the base. • If N is picked as base, AID assigned in sequence of N, N+1, N+2, … • If multiple BSSs are supported in an AP, each BSS should pick a different random base for AID • Enterprise vendors may want to manually configure every AP’s starting AID number • Network topology known Youhan Kim, et al.
AID Generation (2) • AP should avoid assigning an AID value with its 9 LSB bits as 0 • AID 512, 1024, and 1536 should be avoided • AP should avoid assigning AID values with its 9 LSB bits matching the special partial AID value used in STA-to-AP packets • E.g. If all 9 bits of 1 is used as the special AID value for STA-to-AP packets • AID 511, 1023, and 1535 should be avoided Youhan Kim, et al.
Straw Poll #1 • Do you support adding the following into the specification framework document, 11-09/0992? • Partial AID field in VHT-SIG A shall be set to special value(s) (TBD) for STA-to-AP packets. Youhan Kim, et al.
Straw Poll #2 • Do you support adding the following into the specification framework document, 11-09/0992? • AP should choose AID numbers such that the probability of AID numbers overlapping between different BSSs is reduced. Youhan Kim, et al.
Straw Poll #3 • Do you support adding the following into the specification framework document, 11-09/0992? • Any AID values with 9 LSB bits of 0 should not be assigned as a non-AP STA AID. Youhan Kim, et al.
