  1. Surgical Tech Skills Assistant Tulsa Career and Technology Center Project Overview Jon Martens

  2. Scope and objectives • Develop computer-based system to assist surgical tech students in skill development and remediation • Based on existing Surgical Technology Skill Evaluation document with 10 major units • Supplements formal lecture and lab instruction • Used by learner as-needed and on-demand • Could use a variety of media and learning objects • Panorama VR with hot spots, object movies • Video and still photography, audio • Documents, references, checklists • VR training module • Prior research projects indicate need

  3. Design considerations and issues • Interface design • Menu based with major sections corresponding to 10 skills areas • Random access to areas • Ancillary functions such as help • Initial prototype designed • Platform • To be determined • Dependencies on VR software used • Web, LCMS, standalone, hybrid, other?

  4. Design considerations and issues • Detailed instructional design of units • Learning object types and media need to be mapped to skills • Attributes of objects need to be specified in detail • Integration with ancillary components (help, training) • Page and graphics design • “Bill of Materials” • Advanced functionality – what and when? • Tracking • Assessments • Reporting • Development environment • Platform integration is major consideration

  5. Implementation considerations and issues • Approach • Recommend prototype and spiral development techniques • Need intermediate user feedback to refine and develop system • Client expectations • Need to clarify time, scope, and platform expectations • Schedule and resources • Project is larger than a summer class • Availability and skills for follow-on work • What is best method and vehicle for follow-on work? • Development skills and resources • Development software and hardware are new and complex • Learning curves are steep and lengthy • Summer semester is very short

  6. Recommendations • Designate a lead system designer and documentation process (e.g. Wiki) • Determine the target platform for prototype and final • Determine feasible prototype to be delivered at end of summer • Complete design and development of end of summer prototype • Create plan for design and development of future roll-out • Meet with client to discuss expectations and roll-out plan
