Parataxis • I came; I saw; I conquered. • Parataxis implies that conquering was just as easy as coming and looking because there is no subordination ranking the different ideas.
Hypotaxis • Causal relationships exist between sentences; ideas are “ranked” • Encourages reading from “top to bottom” as well as left to right
Hypotaxis • Since it was I who arrived, and I who saw how the land lay, the victory followed as a matter of course. • Instead of implying that the victory was easy and expected as it is in the example of parataxis, the speaker makes it explicit here.
Examples • Parataxis • Some conservation groups opposing the jetport site were local or state groups. But national conservation groups were concerned, too. • Hypotaxis • National conservation groups, as well as local and state ones, opposed the jetport site.
