Problem Statement Example Disengaged workers often exhibit negative attitudes and uncooperative behaviors that lead to poor financial performance (Bakker, Albrecht, & Leiter, 2011). Employee disengagement costs U.S. hospitals with research facilities approximately $29 million per year because of low discretionary output effort and high turnover (Shuck, Reio, & Rocco, 2011; Waldman, Kelly, Aurora, & Smith, 2004/2010). The general business problem is that employers or business leaders may have had limited knowledge regarding ways to engage employees or unite one’s workforce (Demerouti et al., 2010). The specific business problem is that employee disengagement might compromise the businessgrowth and integrity of the identified organizations.

Annotated Bibliography - Example • Lawson, D. (2009). Understanding and treating children who experience interpersonal maltreatment: Empirical findings. Journal of Counseling and Development, 87, 204-215. • Childhood maltreatment is an increasing problem in the United States and can have a negative impact on physical, emotional, and psychological functioning through development into adulthood if left untreated. Physical, emotional, and psychological abuse and neglect pose many potential consequences leaving the children at risk to develop further physical or mental symptoms. Lawson noted post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is among the most common consequence of childhood maltreatment, averaging from 20-60% percent of abused or neglected children. Severe child abuse and borderline personality disorder are highly correlated in his research. The author showed these psychological, behavioral, and personality deficits stem from the effects severe interpersonal trauma during childhood, hindering neurobiological development. Lawson showed treating the shortcomings of brain development due to PTSD or severe interpersonal childhood maltreatment include increasing protective factors, decreasing risk factors, teaching resiliency, forming positive, secure attachments and fostering a higher self-esteem. • The research will aid therapists to integrate CBT and attachment treatment with family-based models to teach families to engage positively with children through individual and family sessions by targeting the cause and effect of the interpersonal abuse on the child. The most important therapeutic factor demonstrated a strong alliance between client and counselor. The relationship will help to model and repair the secure attachment and relationship issues children often face due to deficits in brain development from trauma. The alliance will create a safe environment for children to explore, engage, and work through underlying issues stemming from the abuse and neglect.
