Company Statement • SkyFli makes the paper plane that can give your money the farthest and the longest-lasting flight. • We have undergone extensive tests to ensure only the best reaches the customer.
Qualifications • Dedication, hard work, and innovation has led us to offer superiority in • Number of available selections • Price • Reusability, i.e. durability
Technicalities • Weight Placement • Wing Thickness • Wing Span • No Tail • Dihedral Angle
Weight Placement • Center of gravity (CG) is where an object balances. • A specific point called the neutral point on the plane is the position where neutral pitch stability is guaranteed. • Plane with CG ahead of neutral point (closer to front of plane) is stable. • We place our payload near front of plane.
Reynolds Numbers • Reynolds number (Re) expresses ratio between inertial and viscous forces. • Smaller Re means viscosity is more important. ρ= 1.2 kg/m3 V = 10 miles/hour L = 0.4 feet μ = 3.90x10-7lbf s/ft2 For a paper plane, Re ~ 37,000 Compare with a Cessna 150 which has Re ~ 4,833,562
Wing Thickness • Small Re implies thin wings. A thick airfoil on a paper airplane means that air cannot fully traverse around the airfoil. The separation of flow creates a large drag and little lift. • Theoretically, from an aerodynamic perspective, either 20 lb or 24 lb paper should be used. However, we have observed during our flight tests that a strong wind disrupts the stability of the airplane. Hence, we chose 60 lb paper for our design.
Glide Angle 1/a = L/D Inversely proportional to lift-drag ratio • Smaller glide angle (a) means that plane can fly a longer distance. • Steady glide means lift equals weight. • Reduce drag!
Wing Span • Form drag cannot be changed but induced drag can by increasing AR. • Gliding distance improves with increased wing span and smaller wing area.
No Horizontal Stabilizer • Horizontal tail of a plane allows weight to move forward and aft more while remaining stable and controllable. • Instability arises when the center of gravity moves aft of the neutral point. • Since money adjusts center of gravity to front tip of a plane, a horizontal tail is unnecessary.
Small Adjustments • Many people think that a good airplane needs no adjustment after basic folds are completed. • We at SkyFli know better. That’s why every plane built by us have small adjustments made after the initial fold.
Dihedral Angle • A common mistake is to leave planes with wings folded down at an angle. This anhedral configuration reduces lateral stability of the plane, i.e. plane will roll onto its back or enter a spiraling dive. • A dihedral configuration increases lateral stability. In other words, fold the wings up.
Product Selection • SkyFli Dart (First choice for carrying dollar.) • SkyFliGlider • SkyFliStarship • SkyFliStingray
Future Development • With your funding we can develop better planes to transport your money—even from space. • Funded second stage development can challenge the proposed space paper plane under development by JAXA (Japanese Space Agency).
