Cholera Outbreak of 1854 Cholera: an infection of the small intestine that causes a large amount of watery diarrhea which can lead to dehydration and death. August 31st, 1854: An extreme outbreak of Cholera on Broad Street in London occurs. Over the next 3 days 127 people on or near Broad Street die. In the next week, ¾ the people who lived near or on Broad Street flea while the death toll rises to 500 by September 10th.
John Snow • British physician • Vegetarian, teetotal, and always boiled his water before use • skeptic of the miasma theory • Went into the area where people had been fleeing cholera to conduct studies and interviews • Created a map that showed where deaths were occurring in the Broad Street area • This map would save the lives of hundreds of people
It came from the WATER!? • Snow concluded through his interviews and studies of his dot map that people who used the Broad Street pump contracted the disease • He asked that all the pumps in that area have their handles removed to stop use • After doing this the cases of cholera were drastically reduced
