    2. Al-Razi (864-930) Expert in medicine, put in charge of famous hospital in Baghdad Wrote about Greek-Arab medicine Famous for study of smallpox and chickenpox Use of alcohol for medical purpose Used opium for anesthesia Emphasized the importance of psychological factors in health

    3. Ibn-Sina (980-1037) Called boy genius By the age of 18, he was a physician who took care of the king Wrote his first book at 21also wrote the “Canon”, or Encyclopedia of Medicine First to recognize the contagious nature of T.B. (Tuberculosis) He emphasized the importance of diet, climate, and environment health Described the use of oral anesthetic (pain killers) and tested many drugs His Canon of Medicine was used by medical schools in Europe from the 12th-17th century

    4. Al- Zahravi (963-1013) Called the father of surgery Wrote an encyclopedia on surgery Developed many surgical instruments used in operations Used silk thread for stitch wounds Performed delicate operations such as caesareans

    5. Ibn-Zuhr (1091-1161) Worked mostly in Spain Knew about dissecting and anatomy First to test medicine on animals First to describe diseases and parasites Described intestinal problems; inflammation of middle ear and tumors Wrote important books

    6. Dentists Dentists made false teeth out of bone. They pulled teeth that had become decayed or damaged. Muslims brushed their teeth with a twig or branch and sweetened their breath with herbs and spices Al-Zahravi wrote about crooked teeth and invented the process of making and setting false teeth

    7. Diseases of the Middle Ages They suffered from many diseases we do not worry about High infant mortality rate Famine War Epidemics

The Bubonic Plague (The Black Death) Began about 1331 in the grasslands of Central Asia Found in rodents Spread to humans by bite of flees living in infected rodents Spread quickly because of trade and exchange between cultures Tried many treatments, none worked Plague patients were isolated in pest house

    9. Smallpox Ancient disease form 10,000 B.C. Late 18th century in Europe 400,000 people died Rhazes wrote the first medical description in small pox around about 910 A.D. Explained theory of acquired immunity

    10. Cupping Wet Cupping A small cut on skin would be made and a cupping glass created a suction to pull out a small amount of blood Dry Cupping The glasses were applied to the skin with heat from a flame to make a vacuum in the glass

    11. Ibn al-Baytar Famous for being a botanist (someone who studies plants) Wrote a medical book called Collection of Simple Drugs and Foods Listed 1400 medicinal plants Book included information on how to prepare the drug, its purpose, and the dose

    12. Muhtasib Correct weights and measures used by merchants Proper street cleaning Condemning dangerous buildings Ensuring clean water supply, etc.
