4. Al- Zahravi (963-1013)
Called the father of surgery
Wrote an encyclopedia on surgery
Developed many surgical instruments used in operations
Used silk thread for stitch wounds
Performed delicate operations such as caesareans
5. Ibn-Zuhr (1091-1161)
Worked mostly in Spain
Knew about dissecting and anatomy
First to test medicine on animals
First to describe diseases and parasites
Described intestinal problems; inflammation of middle ear and tumors
Wrote important books
6. Dentists
Dentists made false teeth out of bone. They pulled teeth that had become decayed or damaged.
Muslims brushed their teeth with a twig or branch and sweetened their breath with herbs and spices
Al-Zahravi wrote about crooked teeth and invented the process of making and setting false teeth

Wet Cupping
A small cut on skin would be made and a cupping glass created a suction to pull out a small amount of blood
Dry Cupping
The glasses were applied to the skin with heat from a flame to make a vacuum in the glass
11. Ibn al-Baytar
Famous for being a botanist (someone who studies plants)
Wrote a medical book called Collection of Simple Drugs and Foods
Listed 1400 medicinal plants
Book included information on how to prepare the drug, its purpose, and the dose
