Project output – Phase 1 • To establish Institutional capacities in Karnataka to plan, implement and monitor HWM system • To develop technical concept for collection, treatment and disposal of hazardous waste (TSDF) • To propose economic instruments for sustainability and the required financial structure of TSDF and HW transport • To propose HW abatement and reuse strategies to reduce the quantities of HW generated in one sector (seminars, pilot plant in electroplating sector) • To develop strategy for awareness and stakeholder participation in HWM KSPCB

Status of HAWA project Milestones • Site selection procedure completed • Dobbasapete site – 93.18 acres (21 Feb 2003) • EIA clearance obtained (20 Feb 2004) • GO issued (GO - No. FEE 293 ECO 2002, Bangalore dated 21.04.2004) • Land in possession of KIADB. Process of giving compensation to land losers ongoing • Cleaner Production dissemination within industries – ongoing • Remediation plan prepared for one site in Bangalore KSPCB
Status of HAWA project • State Cabinet cleared project (March 2005) • Land to be handed over to PO by August 06 • Pre-qualification completed Feb 2005 (4 companies short-listed) • Tendering – completed by July 06 • PO selected – M/s. Ramky Consortium Pvt. Ltd. KSPCB
Features of TSDF • The facility would handle about 40,000 tonnes per annum of landfillable hazardous waste. • It is a Rs.57 Crore project for 51 years • Project life cycle includes 1 year of construction, 20 years of landfill operation and 30 years of post closure landfill management. The operation phase will comprise of four stages. Each stage will last 5 years and will require construction of 5-6 cells for operation during next stage. • No incineration facility envisaged KSPCB
Features of TSDF • Shimoga, Bangalore rural, and Bangalore Urban districts have the maximum No. of HW generating industries and maximum quantity • Only solid, or semi solid wastes from the HW generating industries of Karnataka will be accepted • All the wastes will be tested in laboratory and appropriate treatment given to make it suitable for landfilling • No acceptance of municipal solid waste, bio-medical waste, liquid waste or radioactive wastes at the site; KSPCB
