Students at CLASHEP 2019 will choose experimental papers, study them in detail, prepare presentations, and compete for the best talk. This project allows students to delve deep into particle physics research and enhance their presentation skills.

  1. Student Projects CLASHEP 2019– introduction – Martijn Mulders (CERN)

  2. Next Sunday, March 24 After dinner

Each Discussion Group: • Choose one experimental paper, published in a refereed journal • Study and understand in detail all aspects of the analysis described in the paper (trigger, selection, backgrounds, statistical analysis, systematic uncertainties, theoretical interpretation… etc). Follow up references and make use of relevant public-domain material • Prepare a 15-minute presentation of your group’s study, to be presented by one student from your group, on Sunday March 24 after dinner • The order of the talks will be random and there will be a vote to determine the winning presentation (one vote per group)

  4. Further guidelines: • It is better to choose a longer article than a short letter – at least 10 pages of content, not counting abstract, references and author list • Once you have chosen a paper, let me know • We can provide paper copies (for your group) of the paper you select • You can use some time during the discussion sessions to get organized, but most of the work should happen during free time • Work as a team to decide on a paper, plan and share the work, review progress regularly, combine the contributions, select a speaker to represent you, organize a rehearsal of the talk… • It is a student project: the DL may guide occasionally, but it is up to you as a teamto select the paper, share the work, monitor progress, etc

Some Schedule Changes • Today: • Lunch starts at 13:00 as usual • Lecture at 15:30  Statistics lecture 3 • Coffee break 17:00-17:30 • Lecture at 17:30  Higgs lecture 1 • Discussion Session • Tomorrow morning: • first QCD 2, then Higgs lecture 2 • Tuesday: • Early discussion session at 15:30 (replaces lecture) • Two hours free time 17:30-19:30 (between coffee break and early dinner) • Poster session 20:30
