Individuality – People started to separate themselves and start relying on themself more than the government/church. One of the issues was: Conformity, Walt and Emily objected Conformity and attempted to influence others of their time through their poems. Reflection of the time period
Emily’s poems were unique with Slant Rhymes, the use of punctuation, and vivid imagery . Example: “The Stillness in the Room Was like the Stillness in the Air – Between the Heaves of Storm” “Room and Storm” are examples of slant rhyme. Walt’s poetry were unique with references to the wars, use of paradoxes and hyperboles. Example: “I am of old and young, of the foolish as much as the wise,Regardless of others, ever regardful of others,Maternal as well as paternal, a child as well as a man,” This is an example of Paradoxes that Walt uses in his poems.
