Prompt • “But what do we mean by the American Revolution? Do we mean the American war? The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people.” • Using the documents and your knowledge of 1763-1775, evaluate this statement by John Adams.
Thesis • In your table groups, discuss and construct a thesis for the prompt.

Thesis • The quote by John Adams clearly indicates that the American Revolution was more than a military revolution. It was also a social revolution that included a complex series of events that made the actual war possible.

Example • TS: The attitude of the colonists toward British policies changed from political to emotional by the outbreak of the war in 1775. • Docs: A, C, D, E, G, H • Citation: It was one thing to philosophically protest the power of Parliament to tax the colonists directly or indirectly (Docs G & E), but when there was a loss of life (Doc A), the protests became more emotional. This emotion was evident in the circular letters that dealt with “no taxation without representation” (Doc C) and the reaction to the Boston Port Bill (Doc H).
