  1. Unit 2 Study Review!!! Characteristics of Living Things!!!!

  2. 1. What characteristics of living things does a river have? • Grow and Develop – A river can get bigger and develop into more rivers. • Energy – a river has a lot of energy behind it, that is why we created dams to harness that energy. • Respond to its Environment – A river can respond to changes that happen in its environment. • But a river DOES NOT have DNA or cells!!!!

  3. 2. Fur coat of a bear and Homeostasis! • The fur coat of a bear helps keep the bear’s body temperature stable internally! • A bear can keep its body temperature around 88 degrees F while hibernating.

  4. 3. How is reproduction related to Heredity? • Heredity is the passing of traits from parents to offspring which occurs during reproduction.

  5. 4. Stimuli? Response? • Stimuli and Response • Light  Pupils getting smaller • Sound  heart rate increasing • Temperature • Heat  sweating • Cold  shivering and goosebumps

  6. 5. Decomposers are consumers! • Decomposers break down dead matter but they are still consuming organisms. • Producers are completely different because they make their own food.

  7. 6. Cells are 70% Water! • Water is one of our important needs!!!!! Our cells keep hydrated and so do we!

  8. 7. Needs of Organisms! • CAVE – shelter and living space for an organism. • Ant – Provide food for another living thing • Lake – provide water for living things and a space to live.

  9. 8. Growth and Development! • Growth! – An organism growing in size. • Development 0 An organism changing in structure or form. Example: caterpillar to a butterfly!

  10. 9. How we get energy! • Producer – any plant! • Consumer – any animal (bear, cat, dog, human, fish) • Decomposer – fungus (mushroom)

  11. 10. Factors that affect organisms! • Plants and animals are affected by their needs and characteristics of living things. Organisms need: • Water • Food • Living Space/Shelter • Air These 4 needs will help determine where an organism will live!

  12. 11. Different Reproduction • Asexual Reproduction – one parent produces offspring. This only happens with unicellular organisms like bacteria. • Sexual Reproduction – two parents produce offspring and the offspring have characteristics of both parents. All animals.

  13. 12. Is a Flame Alive!!!??? • Characteristics of a flame: • Grow and develop • Create energy • Reproduce – create more fire! • Respond to its environment – the fire can move around its environment and change based on its surroundings. A flame does not have! • Cells • DNA A flame does not have all characteristics so it is not alive!!!

  14. 13. Design an experiment! • Test to see if a Goldfish reacts to music by swimming faster! • Stimulus – music • Response – swimming speed • Remember to set up a control group and an experimental group!

  15. 14. Six Characteristics of all living things!! • D – DNA • R. – Respond to the environment • C – Cells • R – Reproduce • E – Energy • G – Grow and Develop • Dr. CREG can help you remember the characteristics! Practice writing them out!!!!!
