The particles are prepared by electrochemical etch of a silicon wafer. Infused with magnetite nanoparticles, the particles can be manipulated by application of a magnetic field and imaged with MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). The particles shown in the image are each roughly the size of a human hair, and they can be used in applications in microfluidics, environmental sensing, biosensing, drug delivery, or high-throughput screening for new drugs or genetic markers for disease.
