Pregnancy Stages & Weight Gain Where does it all go?
First Trimester • Week 1—Week 12 • Body goes through tremendous changes, mostly hormonally. • Tiredness, Swollen Breasts, Morning Sickness, Cravings, Mood Swings, Constipation, etc.
Baby in 1st Trimester (@ 4 weeks) • Brain and Spinal Cord are formed • Heart Begins to form • Arm and Leg buds appear • Your baby is now an EMBRYO and 1/25 inch long (a pinhead)
Baby in 1st Trimester (@ 8 weeks) • Baby is now a FETUS • 1 inch long, 1 oz • Beginning to form: • Arms and legs • Major Organs • Heart (it beats!) • Fingers and Toes • Sex Organs • Eyes moving forward • Umbilical Cord 1 inch= a small paper clip
Baby in 1st Trimester (@ 12 weeks) • Nerves and Muscles work • External sex organs • Eyelids close until 28 weeks • Head growth stops so body can grow • Now 3 inches long, still weighing an ounce (31 M & Ms) 3 inches = the edge of a post it!
Second Trimester • Week 13—Week 28 • Pains go away, but you feel the physical changes: • Aches, stretch marks, patches of dark skin, numbing in hands, itchy, swelled ankles
Baby in 2nd Trimester (@ 16 weeks) • More of a complete skeleton is forming • Skin forms, you can see through it! • Meconium forms (1st bowel movement) • Starts doing sucking noises (a reflex) • 4-5 inches long and 3 ounces (100 M& M’s) 4-5 inches = the long edge of an index card!!!
Baby in 2nd Trimester (20 weeks) • More active, fluttering feeling • Covered by fluffy hair called “Lanugo” which protects the skin • Eyebrows, eyelashes, and nails • Can hear and swallow • 6 inches long and nine ounces
Baby in 2nd Trimester (@ 24 weeks) • Bone marrow makes blood cells • Taste buds form on tongue • Footprints and finger prints • Real hair grows • Lungs form but don’t work yet • Baby sleeps and wakes • If a girl- a lifetime of eggs are formed • If male- testicles form • 12 inches long and 1 ½ pounds
Third Trimester • Week 29—Week 40 (or birth) • Most uncomfortable • Trouble breathing, heartburn • Feel baby moving • Leaking milk • Really swollen feet • Trouble Sleeping • Baby will begin dropping, practice contractions
Baby in 3rd Trimester (@ 32 weeks) • Bones formed, but still soft • Eyes open and close • Practices breathing, but lungs not formed • Lanugo falls off • 15-17 inches long and 4 lbs
Baby in 3rd Trimester (@36 weeks) • “Vernix” – a protective wax coating, gets thick • Body fat increase • 16-19 inches long and about 6 ½ lb • 37 weeks is full term! Organs ready to function on their own!
For a 29 pound weight gain: • Baby 7.5 pounds • Blood 3 pounds • Breast 2 pounds • Uterus 2 pounds • Placenta 1.5 pounds • Amniotic fluid 2 pounds • Water 4 pounds • Fat, protein 7 pounds other nutrients
SleepingTime to try it out for yourself! Up to five pillows may be needed.
