Remind 101 • One Way Communication Tool – Coach can’t receive text messages • Phone numbers are never exchanged • Parents and athletes can join by sending a text message • You don’t need to download an App on your cell phone • It’s a great tool for coaches to send reminders and schedule updates to both players and parents.
Laptops • Keep them locked up • Coaches will provide information on how to keep them safe and secured
Important Parent Guidelines • Encourage your son or daughter • Model good sportsmanship at games • Model appropriate communication
Key things to remember • Do not meet right after games • Set up a meeting with the coach before contacting athletic director • We ask that the student athlete would communicate with the coach when there is something on their heart or mind, to grow and to become their own advocate. I know that this is sometimes a very difficult barrier to overcome. If the student athlete is not able to overcome that barrier on their own then please send the coach an e-mail that might say something like this, “Coach, I just wanted to give you a heads up that my son/daughter has been coming home very down lately and is confused about their role. If you get a chance, could you find some time to speak to them ?” this will still keep the communication at the athlete to coach level. I have found that this will sometimes break down the fears the athlete might have such as, “if I talk to the coach they will hold it against me and I won’t play.” Sometimes the emotion they are feeling is that they are not playing as much as they want. Coaches understand that emotion. It is natural. Expressing that emotion to a coach or other emotions in an adult dialogue will not result in any sort of punishment. It will also not mean that playing time will increase or that circumstances will necessarily change because the emotion has been communicated. But what will certainly be the case is that confidence in the relationship of the coach and athlete will have an opportunity to grow.
