Chapter 6 Chemical Bonding
Ionic Bond • Ionic bond- attraction of cation and anion forms bond • Left and right side of periodic table • To name, change the ending of the anion into –ide • Examples of names, formulas on board
Covalent bond • Covalent bond- sharing of electron pairs • Right and right side on periodic table (includes H) • Name with prefixes • We will do examples of naming formulas • Exceptions: water, ammonia, methane (and many organic compounds)
Prefixes • 1 = mono • 2 = di • 3 = tri • 4 = tetra • 5 = penta • 6 = hexa • 7 = hepta • 8 = octa • 9 = nona • 10 = deca
Polarity • Polar- uneven distribution of electrons • Nonpolar- even distribution of electrons • See examples with arrows on board
Exception to Octet Rule • B, Be, P, S, Xe • See example drawings on board
Electron Dot/ Lewis dot notation • Dots show number of valence electrons • See drawing on board and practice problems • See examples of bonds, including single, double, triple, and resonance • Resonance- several ways to draw one structure
Ionic compound • + and – ions in equal proportion of charges • Formula unit- simplest ratio of ionic compound’s formula • Drawing and breaking of ionic compound on board
Metallic bond • Metals bond to themselves • Examples
VSEPR • Valence shell electron pair repulsion • P. 200 • Examples • Hybrid orbitals (sp, sp2, sp3, dsp3, d2sp3) • Why angles are not exact
Hydrogen Bond and London Dispersion • Hydrogen bond- between H, N, O, F • Weak • London dispersion- momentary attraction to positive nucleus, also weak • See drawings on board0
