Total Quality Management (TQM) • Definition of quality: the ability (degree of accomplishments/excellence) of a product or service to satisfy the requirements of clients/customers • Total Quality Management (TQM) is a comprehensive and structured strategy to manage the quality of products and services by making improvements through continuous feedback and assessment. • In recent years, TQM requirements have been defined by organization to adherent to established standards, such as the International Organization for Standardization's (ISO, 1946) standards series. • ISO 9000 (1987, 2000) family addresses "quality management". • ISO 14000 (1996, 2004) family addresses "environmental management”
ISO Management System Standards • Plan-Do-Check-Act is the operating principle of the ISO’s management system standards • Plan: set clear objectives and develop plans accordingly • Do: implementation • Check: assessment based on pre-determined objectives and metrics • Act: continuous evaluations leading to subsequent improvements
Quality Management Principles • The eight quality management principles for the revised ISO 9000:2000 series are: • Principle 1: Customer focus • Principle 2: Leadership • Principle 3: Involvement of people • Principle 4: Process approach • Principle 5: System approach to management • Principle 6: Continual improvement • Principle 7: Factual approach to decision making • Principle 8: Mutually beneficial supplier relationships • The next step
Quality Control Tools • Quality Functional Deployment (QFD) • Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) • Taguchi Method • Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) • Statistical Process Control (SPC) • Six Sigma • DMAIC: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control : usually for existing processes • DMADV: Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify: for new processes
