  1. DD SS Web Quest 2011 Economics iPad Project

  2. Gulliver’s Travel Determine supply, demand and equilibrium

  3. Introducing the iPad… • Video • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JP8wKtFA4Io

  4. Project A – Background of iPad • When did the iPad first originate? • How is the price of the iPad determined? • What are some of the related/ associated products for iPad? How are these products related to the iPad?

  5. Steve Jobs introduced the iPad on the 27th January 2010. Apple’s first tablet computer was the Newton MessagePad 100 which was introduced in 1993.

  6. How are the prices of iPad determined? Let’s take a look at the table for cost of production and the retail price. Table for cost of production of iPads Table for retail price of iPads This shows that the producers of iPad are profit driven.

  7. Substitutes / New products Samsung Galaxy Tab iPad2

  8. Substitutes ( Similar functions as iPad ) • Consumers might choose to go for substitutes that have similar functions to that of iPad at a lower price. • This results in the decrease in demand of the iPad and thus might result in the decrease in price of iPad till an equilibrium is reached.

  9. Complements iPadAccessories

  10. The products that are associated to the demand for iPad would be the price of the complements eg. accessories that are used jointly together with the iPad. If the price of the accessories of iPad are attractive and at an acceptable price, the demand for it and the iPad would increase.

  11. Project Part B • 4 main factors • 2 from the consumers’ point of view • The other 2 from the producers’ point of view.

  12. Consumers’ point of view • Taste & Preferences • Government Legislation

  13. Taste & Preferences Can be affected by: Constant advertisements that is made through the internet Reviews and ratings made for the product

  14. The creation of a more efficient product produce a favorable change in consumer taste for technology-related product. • Consumers will be attracted to buy the iPad • Leading to an increase in demand of Ipad. • Demand curve will shift rightwards, with the price of ipad remaining the same.

  15. Demand Curve

  16. More dollar votes will be casted for the Ipad • This would signal a change in prices that the consumers are willing and able to pay, thus increasing the price of iPad. • Consumers are thus more likely to buy iPad as it will maximize their individual satisfaction. (MB=MC)

  17. Government legistation • Case study : China • China has previously banned the sales of iPad in its market. • However, it has finally managed to clear a major government hurdle, allowing it to be exported and sold to the Chinese market.

  18. Although the iPad has yet to be officially sold on the mainland, it has already inspired Chinese companies to join the trend of developing tablet computers. • Thus, this will increase the worldwide demand for iPads • This will result in an increase in the price of iPad. • Consumers are willing and able to pay more for it to maximize their satisfaction

  19. Producers’ point of view • State of technology • Expectations of future prices

  20. State of technology • Since iPad have so far surpassed other tablet computers in its applications and technology, it is now considered as a product that have made use of all kinds of new methods to make it more efficient. • With an improvement in technology, more goods can be improved/produced with a given amount of resources and time. Thus increasing supply and profits.

  21. Expectations of future prices • Demand for the current iPad will fall since the new iPad 2 has greater and better functions than the former iPad . • Producers reduce the supply of iPad • Increase the supply of iPad only when the prices of iPad increase in the market to gain more profits.
