Angels We Have Heard on High Hymn 113
Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plains, And the mountains in reply Echo back their joyous strains. Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? Say what may the tidings be, Which inspire your heav’nly song? Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo. verse 2 & refrain
Come to Bethlehem, and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn King. Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo. verse 3 & refrain
See within a manger laid Jesus, Lord of heav’n and earth! Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, With us sing our savior’s birth. Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo. * verse 4 & refrain
THE CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 19.1-4)
Minister:The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.
People: Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
Minister:There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.
People:Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tent for the sun.
Prayer of ConfessionAll:O God, in the beginning You spoke, and creation was born, the object of Your loving care.
In the fullness of time You spoke, and the Word became flesh, Jesus, gift of Your love.
We wonder at the miracle of creation;we stand in awe before the mystery of the incarnation.
Forgive us earthbound creatures, feeble in faith, empty of hope, lacking in love, falling short of Your righteousness.
Let me with Simeon clasp the new-born child to my heart, embrace Him with undying faith, exulting that He is mine and I am His.
We wait upon You with ready hearts, O God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Lord, hear our prayers.
SILENT PRAYERS OF THANKSGIVING AND CONFESSION
Minister:I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples.
What Child Is This,Who, Laid to Rest Hymn 281
What Child is this, who laid to rest, On Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:This, this is Christ the King, The babe, the Son of Mary.
Why lies He in such mean estate Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear; for sinners here The silent Word is pleading.
This, this is Christ the King,Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:This, this is Christ the King, The babe, the Son of Mary.
So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh, Come, peasant, king to own Him; The King of kings salvation brings, Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
This, this is Christ the King,Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:This, this is Christ the King, The babe, the Son of Mary.
1 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.2 He existed in the beginning with God.
3 God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.4 The Word gave life to everything that was created,[a]and his life brought light to everyone.
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.[b]6 God sent a man, John the Baptist,[c]7 to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony.
8John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light.9The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
The Lord’s Prayer OUR FATHER, WHO ART IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BE THY NAME. THY KINGDOM COME, THY WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD, AND FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS AS WE FORGIVE OUR DEBTORS; AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL. FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM, AND THE POWER, AND THE GLORY FOREVER AMEN
