What do children need to learn in Preschool? Preschool is a period of tremendous cognitive growth. Children this age are undergoing a large amount of change very quickly and are learning to see the world in many new and interesting ways. While the goals may vary nationally and by each individual school, most states have adopted the Common Core State Standards and follow their general guidelines for the kindergarten curriculum. Understanding these goals will help you determine if your child is ready for kindergarten, needs to do some prep work, or is maybe even too advanced for a regular kindergarten class. Here are just five of the cognitive skills kids need to learn in order to be successful throughout their schooling. 1. Language Usually, before kindergarten, most children can use words they've learned from conversations with others or by being read to. Throughout the academic year, your child's speech will become more structured and understandable, and reading and writing skills will emerge and advance. 2. Basic needs. Learning to take care of their own basic needs, such as setting up lunches, putting on their own jacket, and eventually tying their own shoes, fosters independence in even the youngest preschoolers. 3. Reading A child may have already had an early start on learning their alphabet. Educational television shows like Sesame Street often allow kids to enter kindergarten with some foundational skills. Regardless of what they knew upon entering kindergarten, your child should further their phonics knowledge this year. 4. Play Children need to explore without the limitations adults sometimes place around activities. Whenever you can, just keep your hands behind your back, resist the temptation to direct every single activity and let them develop. You might just be amazed at what they can do all by themselves. 5. Ratings and Reputation There are several websites that will rank schools and kindergartens for parents. Parents should try to use multiple tools and references in order to make their decision. Besides, speak to the children who study in a kindergarten and their parents to get a better idea.
