  2. Main Character profiles • Eric Simmons is an 18 yr old teenager who lives with his brother Phillip. He is troubled by the death of his mother. It has made him become depressed and dethatched from society. He uses antidepressants to help him however they seem to work only for a short period of time, they also contain side effects which consists of tiredness, confusion and seizures. Despite his medical condition and his detachment from society, Eric is very observant, kind and friendly. He is also studying a criminology degree in university. He does not like being around a lot of people he finds it too claustrophobic and awkward. He only has a small group of friends that he has met through the university. • Stephen Simmons is the father of Eric and Phillip. He is not revealed as their father until the end of the film. He is also the leader of the cult “Sodalitas” which is a secret society. What the cult does is left ambiguous, the audience is left with an enigma. He has become disillusioned through wealth and having too much power. He never finished high school or went on to do further education, instead he Is self taught he does not like institutions or being dictated to. • Phillip Simmons is 24 years old, living with his brother, wife and child. After doing a 4 year degree course in law, he is put on placement to work for a multinational law firm. He is very intelligent; acing all of his assignments and exams in university. However when is put on work placement for the biggest law firm in the world and he finds the work very hard and pressurizing. He is not as affected by the death of his mother as much as Eric. He is very supportive of his wife and helps out with the baby.

  3. Are our characters typical or untypical characters of the psychological thriller genre • The psychological thriller genre consists with elements of mystery and intrigue. The characters within this genre have certain flaws for example the main character in our film uses antidepressants to help him get over his mothers death. It is hard to define this character as someone who is typical teenager of this genre although he does faces with the typical troubles of teenage life. He finds it hard to make friends as his mothers death has really affected him. • Stephen Simmons is a very typical thriller antagonist. He deeply insane and delusional. He does not trust anyone at all. He feels that trusting people leads to deception, which why he has paranoia. As the leader of the cult he has assistants that aid him. What the cult does behind the scenes is ambiguous. However, the members of the cult have a meeting once a week in a secret location. • Phillip Simmons is not much of typical character of this genre he is more of an everyday person. Unlike his brother he does not have any issues or flaws within his character. He does not have any major issues surrounding his inner self. He tries to help his brother find out the mystery behind their mothers death.

  4. Mise en scene and its significance towards the characters We thought of making each character a unique individual. The character Eric dresses in casual clothes which teenagers wear. He is always paranoid and stressed out. His bedroom is always messy suggesting that he is depressed. Whereas his brother Phillip is very organised and likes to keep things nice and tidy. We only see a few glimpses of Phillip we never see his face. We only see him in the cloak and the hood.

  5. Thriller characters • Our three main characters are based upon other thriller characters. Eric character is based upon a mixture of different thriller characters. We took the idea of him using the anti depressant pills from the film Minority report where the main character Chief John Anderton takes pills to get over the death of his son. • The idea of having a villain with a psychotic personality we took that from a mixture of psychological thriller films and one in particular we looked at was the character Patrick Bateman from the film American Psycho, he is a wealthy New York investment banking executive, hiding his alternate psychopathic ego. Chief John Anderton (Tom Cruise) Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale)
