  1. Albedo Positive Feed Back Loop

  2. What is Albedo? • REFLECTIVITY • The proportion of radiation reflected by a surface. • Different surfaces reflect different amounts of the sun’s radiation.

  3. Different Surfaces = Different Albedos • Ice & Snow have HIGH albedos (they reflect HIGH levels of radiation). • Grass & Trees have LOW albedos (they reflect LOW amounts of radiation)

  4. Guess the Albedo & Arrange from Highest to Lowest. • Water • Sand/Desert • Clouds • Forest • Fresh Snow Recall: Albedo is proportion of radiation reflected by a surface. High Albedo = Bigger # = More Reflection, Less Absorption. Low Albedo = Small # = Less Radiation, More Absorption.

  5. Answer: • High Albedo (High Reflection/Low Absorption) • Fresh Snow 85% • Clouds 40-70% • Sand/Desert 25% • Forest 10% • Water 8% • Low Albedo (Low Reflection/High Absorption)
