Typical Issues Adult Learners & Veterans Face Facing a period of transition – shapes their entire context Low social integration makes it more difficult to get involved Inadequate use of services due to time demands, lack of knowledge, lack of support, lack of focus of services Lectures/classes geared toward traditional age students Conflicting roles – family, work, school Residentially – living with traditional age students

  5. Challenges in Addressing Adult & Veteran Residential Needs • Converting residence space = $$ • 4 person student house vs. 1 family house • Renovating halls to fit needs • Untrained hall staff – programming, unique needs • Lack of counseling resources

Addressing These Needs & Challenges • Cost • Housing rate comparable to community private rental rate • Veteran housing benefits • Untrained student staff • Develop specific training session • Programming • Lack of counseling resources • Partner with VA, AMVETS, VFW, etc. • Advocate with counseling services office • Inadequate research for residential campus • Inspired by other institutions’ programs and services • Listening, creativity, and resourcefulness
