  1. 7.EE.1 Apply operations to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients. 7.EE.2 Understand that rewriting an expression in different, yet equivalent, forms in a problem can show how the quantities in it are related.

  2. CLASS PROCEDURE As soon as you come in you should: 1. Place homework on your desk. 2. Open agenda to current week. 3. Work on Spiral Review due on Friday-All work should be on a separate sheet and only the answers are given on the question sheet. 4. Always have a book to read in case you have a few extra minutes. You will need your class notebook, colored pencils, pencil, glue stick, every day.

  3. BOP Work on weekly spiral questions. They will be given on Monday and turned in on Friday for a weekly grade. If you finish early, then you should look back over homework, study vocabulary, Complete vocabulary cards, look over your notes from previous days. Read. IT WILL BE A QUIET TIME WHILE I CHECK HOMEWORK.

  4. Traffic light L8 Learning Goal-I will What I know: (1 sentence about what your already know about the topic.) Proof of learning-guided practice. Reflection (creative) • R8 • date • Combining Like Terms • Learner Objective:Students should be able to simplify expressions by combining like terms. Set up the right and left side of your pages.

  5. Collecting Like Terms Page R8 Date: 8-28-13 Students should be able to simplify expressions by combining like terms.

  6. 2-9 Combining Like Terms Helpful Hint Use different shapes or colors to indicate sets of like terms. Course 2 Example 1: Identify like terms in the list. Look for like variables with like powers. 3t, 5w2, 7t, 9v, 4w2, 8v 3t 5w2 7t 9v 4w2 8v Like terms: 3t and 7t 5w2 and 4w2 9v and 8v

  7. Collecting Like Terms -5a - 2 + 3a - 4b + a - 12 + 6b - a • Follow these steps: • Draw lines in front of each addition (+) and subtraction (-) sign to separate the terms. • Color all like terms the same color. Like terms have the same variable. -5a - 2 + 3a - 4b + a - 12 + 6b - a -5a - 2+ 3a - 4b + a- 12 + 6b - a

  8. 3. Put each group of like terms together. -5a +3a +1a -1a -2 -12 Like Terms have Identical variables 6b -4b REMEMBER: A variable by itself (like x) has a coefficient of 1. So a = 1a. 4. Simplify each group into one term. +2b -2a -14

  9. 2-9 Combining Like Terms Course 2 Example 2: Combine like terms. A. 6t – 4t 6t– 4t 6t and 4t are like terms. 2t Subtract the coefficients. B. 45x – 37y + 87 In this expression, there are no like terms to combine.

  10. 2-9 Combining Like Terms Course 2 Example 2 (Continued): Combine like terms. Identify like terms. C. 3a2 + 5b + 11b2 – 4b + 2a2 – 6 3a2 + 5b+ 11b2 – 4b + 2a2 – 6 Group like terms. (3a2 + 2a2) + (5b – 4b)+ 11b2 – 6 Add or subtract the coefficients. 5a2 + b + 11b2 – 6

  11. 2-9 Combining Like Terms Course 2 Example 3: Geometry Application Write an expression using the side lengths. Write an expression for the perimeter of the triangle shown. Combine like terms in the expression. x + 3x + 2 + 2x + 3 Identify and group like terms. (x+ 3x + 2x) + (2 + 3) 2x + 3 3x + 2 Combine like terms. 6x + 5 x

  12. 2-9 Combining Like Terms Course 2 Insert Lesson Title Here 5. Write an expression for the perimeter of the given figure. 2x + 3y x + y x + y 6x + 8y 2x + 3y

  13. Sample EOG Question: Write an expression to find the perimeter of the polygon shown below. 2 + (x + 4) + (2x + 1) + 3x = (x + 2x + 3x) + (2 + 4 + 1) = 6x + 7

  14. L8 Guided Practice 1.) 10x + 4y

  15. 2.) 10b + 4

  16. 3.) 15x + 8y + 10z

  17. 4x + 2 5x + 8y + 4 10x + y + 7 5x 6x + 8y 4x

  18. Sample EOG Question: Daisy bought three folders for b dollars each and two report covers for c dollars each. She also bought a binder for $5. Which expression could Daisy use to find the total cost? b + c + 5 5bc + 5 5 – 3b – 2c 3b + 2c + 5

  19. 2-9 Combining Like Terms Course 2 Insert Lesson Title Here Lesson Quiz: Part 1 EXIT TICKET Identify like terms. 1. 3n2 5n 2n3 8n 2. a5 2a2a3 3a 4a2 Combine like terms. 3. 4a + 3b + 2a 4. x2 + 2y + 8x2 5n, 8n 2a2, 4a2 6a + 3b 9x2 + 2y

  20. 2-9 Combining Like Terms Course 2 Insert Lesson Title Here Lesson Quiz: Part 2 5. Write an expression for the perimeter of the given figure. 2x + 3y x + y x + y 2x + 3y 6x + 8y

  21. Traffic Light Red - I have lots of questions. Yellow - I mostly get it but need practice. Green - I got it; No problems; Ready to move on.

  22. SUMMARY/REFLECTION 8-29 Explain to someone who is absent how to combine like terms. Go back to yesterday’s lesson and write a reflection: Make up your own way of remembering order of operations. Homework: Handout on combining like terms
