In “The Gift and the Magi” and one of the political cartoons we studied in class, how does the use of irony communicate freedom of expression. OR In “The Gift and the Magi” and one of the political cartoons we studied in class, how do the authors use irony to communicate a universal idea/message?
In “The Gift of the Magi” and the first political cartoon, the authors use irony to communicate the importance of communication. In “The Gift of the Magi”, Della found out that Jim, her husband, bought her combs, although she cut her precious hair to buy his gift, when she says to her husband, “give me your watch,’ he responds with, “Dell...I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs”. Through situational irony, the author shows that if they hadn’t kept secrets, neither of them would be without their most prized possession. In the first political cartoon, a man observes the Capital Buildingsatellite and sarcastically says, “Who says government doesn’t listen to what its citizens have to say?” This verbal irony implies that if the government was listening to what was important, they might actually act on the public’s true concerns and America would be a better place. In both pieces, the authors use irony to demonstrate the value of communication.
