SCIENCE Blue Tongue • Mandate for epidemiological analysis • 2 components: • Regular update; continued through 21 December and resumed 8 January • Global epidemiological analysis: 15 January timeline for completing data acquisition and exchange • To ensure adequate financial support EFSA launched tender that was finalised end December 2006 with 4 national research institutes in BE, DE, FR and NL.
Scientific Committee Meeting January 2007: • Meeting held with network for EU food consumption database managers to complete EFSA’s database on food consumption • Started 2 new ad-hoc WG’s • to provide advise on system for internal and external review of the quality of EFSA’s work • responsiveness to urgent issues • EFSA launched a public consultation in order to seek public comments on the use of Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) as a safety assessment tool for microorganisms added to food and feed.
Risk assessment • AHAW;Opinions adopted on rabies and brucellosis; • CONTAM;8 WG meetings on aflatoxins in food, PFOS, marine biotoxins, carry-over of coccidiostats in non-target animal feed; undesirable substances in animal feed subsections natural plant products and POP’s • FEEDAP; FEEDAP participated in the 19 December WG of the Standing Committee aiming at establishing new guidelines for the assessment of additives for use in animal nutrition on Commission’s invitation • NDA; two WG meetings held, one on population reference intakes and another one on claims. NDA received four new requests for scientific opinions, three of them concerning novel food applications and one concerning allergies • PPR; 2 adoptions foreseen in January onthe revision of Annexes II and III of the Directive 91/414, sections Toxicology and Fate
External Relations • Visit to Berlin 18/19 January • Visit of BEUC • EFSA received a delegation from the Japanese Food Safety Commission • Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety opening
Communications • Media relations(four press releases in December/January) • Publication of 2nd Community report on Zoonoses and press release Dec 14 attracted strong media and public attention • 25,649 downloads of report, 821 downloads of PR to date • Supplier for redesign of EFSA logo selected • Web redesign continues • Bluetongue bulletin updated online
