Covalent AND Ionic Compounds
Ionic ¤ often form between metals and nonmetals ¤ bond formed between oppositely charged ions ( An ion is a charged atom ) ¤ when ionic bonds are formed an atom loses an e- and another atom gains the e-, the 2 ions with opposite charges are formed ¤ when ionic compounds have a positive charge then they are called cations ¤ when ionic compounds have a negative charge then they are called anions ¤ when naming an ionic compound you always put the cation’s symbol first along with it’s charge then comes the anion with it’s charge
Covalent Bonds φ form of chemical bonding that is characterized by the sharing of pairs of electrons between atoms φatoms can share more than one electron between each other they can also share electrons with many atoms φ don’t conduct electricity in water φ soft and squishy φ covalent compounds are not very soluble in water φwhen they form they comply with the octet rule φwhen naming covalent compounds you figure out the electronegativity, the element with the lowest electronegativity is always written first then you write the prefixes, the element that is written last always ends in –ide
Examples of Ionic Bonds NaCl Ca2+ Ж Calcium Ж soft for a metal soft enough that it can be cut with a knife Ж in the making of cements and mortars Ω Sodium Chloride Ω better known as table salt Ω is responsible for the salinity of the oceans
Examples of Covalent Bonds H2O NH3 # water # Covers 70% of Earth # universal solvent # ammonia # normally found as a gas # pungent odor # serving as a fertilizer
